How do I apply for an Italian residence permit?
Before Brexit, a British citizen was also an EU citizen, so it was quick and easy to apply for a residence permit as long as you met the requirements.
But moving from the UK to Italy after Brexit is more complicated and can take months, if not longer. Here are the things you need to do:
# You can get a long-stay visa from the Italian Consulate in London (you will need this to apply for residency when you arrive in Italy).
# You can move to Italy once your visa is approved.
# Go to the “Sportello Amico” counter at your local post office within 8 days of your arrival in Italy. Here, you must pick up a “Permesso di Soggiorno” kit (right to stay).
# Fill out the kit and send it back to the Post Office with the “Marca da Bollo” duty stamp (approximately 16 euros).
# Then, you’ll be given a time to go to your local “Questura” (police office).
# Bring your post office receipt and the originals of all the documents requested to the meeting. You might have to answer some more questions as well.
After you’ve done these things, you’ll be told when to go back to the police station to get your Italian residence permit card.
